Saskatoons: Prime Prairie Produce
Saskatoons have been harvested on the Prairies as long as there have been people here. The First Nations used this blue fruit in pemmican, and I love them in pies, preserves, muffins, and fresh eating (add cream and a touch of sugar for an easy dessert). Wikipedia references a nice nutrient chart, and saskatoons are prized for their high antioxidant levels.
I currently grow 7 cultivated varieties (pics/descriptions to come):
Honeywood
Martin
Smoky
JB30
Thiessen
Lee #8
Nelson
Saskatoons will be our primary marketed crop, and we hope to sell a limited amount in summer of 2011. Family and friends have already been asking for first dibs on this years' crop, so if it is a great growing year the general public may have to wait until 2013 before our bushes are mature enough to produce enough berries to sell to non-acquaintances. We have a lot of family and friends!
