Honeyberries: Early Bloomers
Also known as Haskap, honeyberries are an emerging fruit crop, most often used in processing, but my kids still eat them like candy. It's vital to pick them fully ripe (rich blue/purple, and not green on the inside) to avoid a bitter flavour. I find they taste similar to a cross between blueberries (same texture) and cranberries (they have a bit of a kick), some people think they are just like blueberries, others suggest a hint of raspberry. What I find particularly useful is that our varieties are the earliest edible prairie fruit to ripen, and they can handle a late hard frost while in full bloom - as I saw firsthand in 2010, with no ill effects on the crop. Many horticultural programs are working on new and improved cultivars - enhancing flavour and nutrient content. It doesn't appear to be very susceptible to major diseases and it seems that its limiting factors are mainly climate and soil (they prefer cooler climes and organic soils - perfect for my land!)
I currently grow Siberian varieties in my test plot:
Borealis
Blue Belle
Berry Blue
Berry Smart
Tundra
Indigo Gem
Indigo Treat
The honeyberries I currently grow are maturing rapidly, and 2014 we plan on sell . I am planning on getting new varieties, some of which are later blooming, and with different flavours.
